The Atom-CPU is a perfect basis for a low-cost system. It works very energy saving and therfor is perfect for mobile usage. But also can be used as a server, Car-PC or Multimedia solutions.
Atom-CPU mainly was developed for the upcoming „Mobile Internet Devices“ (MID), which are fielded between notebooks and cell phones. „The processors were equipped in 45nm production with the worlds smallest transistors“, said Intels Vice President Sean Maloney.
As IT-world currently is crying for „GreenIT“ schreit, this mainboard can be the answer. For example Intel was able to reduce the power consumption of the CPU from precessor D201GLY2

Good entry-level motherboard, and cheap. A few gripes though : no wifi, not fanless, *very* noisy (the chipset fan is frankly awful, I had to replace it with something else), and the chipset HS + fan is very high, making it a problem to fit in a "regular" case. All in all, I am quite happy with it.

Ich hab dieses Mainboard jetzt seit ein paar Monaten verbaut und ich muss sagen, egal was ich bisher gemacht habe, es funktioniert wunderbar, egal ob GPS, MediaPlayer oder Filme, alles läuft tadellos, sogar gleichzeitig ;) Also mein Fazit, beachtliche Leistung bei diese Größe und sogar noch stromsparend^^

Schon beim Auspacken sieht man, aus welcher Ecke die Mainboards der Intel Essentials-Serie stammen. Neben der Treiber-CD, den benötigten Kabeln und einer Kurzanleitung liegen noch Aufkleber mit der Jumper-Belegung zum Anbringen im Gehäuse sowie für das ATX-Panel ausserhalb bei.
Die Ausstattung spricht auch eher für industriellen Einsatz, gegen den Trend sind neben vier USB-Ports auch noch ein paralleler und ein serieller Port auf dem ATX-Panel zu finden, ein DVI-Port fehlt leider. Wer das D945GCLF also für den professionellen Büroeinsatz verwenden möchte, braucht noch eine entsprechende Grafikkarte für den PCI-Port.
Die Anschlüsse auf dem Board sind der Verwendung angemessen, ein PATA-Anschluss (im Chipsatz, kein JMicro/Promise-Chip) und zwei SATA-Anschlüsse bieten die Möglichkeit für den Anschluss von bis zu vier Laufwerken, ein Diskettenlaufwerk ist nicht mehr vorgesehen. Es gibt zwei Lüfteranschlüsse auf dem Mainboard, einer ist bereits vom Chipsatz-Kühler belegt, der andere ist dreipolig und über PWM drehzahlgeregelt.
Diese Regelung funktioniert gut und lässt sich entweder temperaturabhängig betreiben oder auf einen festen Prozent-Wert der Maximal-Drehzahl festlegen.
Das BIOS ist funktional ausgestattet, symptomatisch ist die Tatsache, dass die Einstellungen für die Bootmedien mehr Optionen enthalten als die Einstellungen für tiefergehende Optionen wie RAM-Timings - die Option ?Aggressive Timing? führte dann auch gleich dazu, dass der Rechner nicht mehr startete.
Energiesparoptionen sucht man leider vergebens, auf eine dynamische Taktung der CPU muss man wohl verzichten.

Im Vergleich zum Intel D201GLY2, also dem Board mit Celeron 1,2GHz CPU, passiv gekühlt, dürfte dieses Board eine etwas höhere Geschwindigkeit bedingt durch den besseren Chipsatz aufweisen.
Der Stromverbrauch soll sich nach Aussagen anderer Webseiten im ähnlichen Rahmen befinden, die passive Kühlung nicht immer ausreichend sein.
Ich bin mit dem D945GCLF ganz zufrieden, die langsame LAN-Schnittstelle stört etwas, USB-Boot funktioniert problemlos und die Geschwindigkeit ist für die Verwendung als NAS/Homeserver mit Bittorrent mehr als ausreichend, der Onboard-Lüfter noch im Bereich des erträglichen.
